Giving is not a transaction we fulfill; it is a vital part of our spiritual rhythm. When we open our hands to give, we aren't just funding a ministry or checking a box — we are actively participating in the very character of God. Our Creator is a giver by nature, and when we practice generosity, we mirror His heart to the world around us. As Jesus Himself reminded us in Acts 20:35, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." That blessing isn't always financial; it is the spiritual joy of breaking the grip of materialism and choosing trust over fear.
PRIORITIZING GOD
True biblical generosity begins with our priorities. In Proverbs 3:9, we are encouraged to "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops." Giving God our "firstfruits" means offering Him our best and our first, rather than giving Him whatever happens to be left over at the end of the month. It is a tangible way of saying, "God, I trust You to sustain me, and I acknowledge that everything I have belongs to You anyway."
When we take that step of faith, God meets us with incredible faithfulness. Jesus painted a beautiful picture of this abundance in Luke 6:38, promising: "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap." God is never a debtor to our generosity; we can never out-give Him.
Ultimately, the atmosphere of our giving matters just as much as the amount. God does not want us to give out of guilt, pressure, or obligation. As 2 Corinthians 9:7 beautifully captures, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
