Whether you grew up in a church, haven't stepped foot in one for decades, or have never been at all, Alpha is designed for you. At Overflow Church in Fish Hoek, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to explore the spiritual dimension of life in a way that is respectful, engaging, and entirely pressure-free.
THE THREE PILLARS OF AN ALPHA SESSION
Every Alpha session across the globe follows a simple but powerful format that prioritizes human connection and honest inquiry. This format consists of three key elements: food, a talk, and a discussion.
1. Food and Connection: We always start with a meal or refreshments. Why? Because there is something special about sitting around a table together. It breaks down barriers and allows people to get to know one another on a personal level before we dive into the evening’s topic. At our Fish Hoek campus, we take pride in creating a warm, hospitable atmosphere where you can relax after a busy day.
2. The Talk: Following the meal, we watch a short film or listen to a live talk. These talks are designed to be engaging and thought-provoking. They explore the big questions of life and the basics of the Christian faith, addressing topics like "Who is Jesus?", "How can I have faith?", and "How does God guide us?". The goal isn't to provide a lecture, but to spark ideas and curiosity.
3. The Discussion: This is arguably the most important part of Alpha. In small groups, guests are encouraged to share their thoughts and perspectives on the talk. There is no obligation to say anything, but if you do, your contribution is valued. It’s a space where you can disagree, ask "why?", or simply listen to others. There is no follow-up and no pressure to join the church afterward; the conversation belongs to the group.
A GLOBAL PHENOMENON WITH A LOCAL HEART
Since its inception, millions of people have experienced Alpha in over 160 countries. It has been translated into dozens of languages and is supported by all major Christian denominations. However, while the framework is global, the heart of our course is very much local to the South Peninsula. We understand the unique culture and community of Fish Hoek, and our team is dedicated to making this the most welcoming environment possible.
